MEDICATION MANAGEMENT

When Medication Feels Confusing or Uncertain

Starting psychiatric medication can feel overwhelming. You may be wondering if medication is the right step, worried about side effects, or unsure whether your current medication is actually helping.

Many people have experienced rushed appointments where prescriptions are written quickly without enough time to fully understand their symptoms, history, goals, or even ask questions.

What most people want is simple: to be heard, have options, be part of the treatment plan, and feel confident about it.

1 in 5 American adults lives with a mental illness. Less than half ever receive care.

That gap isn't because people don't want help — it's because the system makes it hard to ask for it. Psychiatric care shouldn't feel like a privilege you have to fight for. When medication is the right tool, it deserves to be prescribed thoughtfully, monitored carefully, and adjusted with you — not at you. This is what collaborative psychiatric care actually looks like.

Psychiatric medications can be an important part of treatment for conditions like anxiety, depression, ADHD, and mood disorders. When prescribed and monitored carefully, medication can help stabilize symptoms, improve daily functioning, and support overall mental wellness.

But medication works best when it is approached intentionally, with time to evaluate what is helping, what may need adjustment, and what other factors may be influencing your mental health.

Through telehealth psychiatry across Massachusetts, I provide personalized medication management designed to support your mental health goals. Together, we review your symptoms, medical history, and previous medication experiences to determine whether medication may be helpful and what approach makes the most sense for you.

Medication care is collaborative and ongoing. Adjustments can be made over time to improve effectiveness, minimize side effects, and ensure your treatment plan continues to reflect your needs and preferences.

For some patients, this may also include medication deprescribing, an intentional process of safely reducing or discontinuing medications when appropriate.

Follow-up appointments are based on your symptoms, their severity, and any medication changes, ranging from every two weeks to every three months once stable.

Medication Management May Include:

  • Review of current and past symptoms

  • Review of current and past medications, including what worked or didn’t and why

  • Discussion of treatment goals and treatment options

  • Psychiatric medication prescribing when appropriate

  • Ongoing monitoring of effectiveness and side effects

  • Medication adjustments when needed

  • Support for safe and personalized medication deprescribing
